The X_HeERO project has officially launched! This EU-funded project aims to prepare Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) across the EU for the implementation of Next Generation (NG) eCall, based on the 112-emergency number. eCall, the emergency call service that notifies emergency services in cases of a road accident, is a vital technology for the protection of road users that operates across the EU.
This initiative is critical to ensuring the continued operation of eCall systems as Europe’s mobile communication networks transition to 4G/5G networks. While eCall is technology-neutral, vehicles delivered today still rely on 2G and 3G modems, leaving many systems at risk as these networks are phased out.
NG eCall uses packet-switched communications which work on 4G/5G networks to deliver faster data transmission, higher security, and the ability to transfer additional data alongside emergency calls. These features can give PSAPs better situational awareness, resulting in a faster emergency response in case of a road accident. In addition, X_HeERO will extend the study of eCall for vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists) and autonomous vehicles, going beyond traditional vehicle accidents.
The project will deliver a comprehensive blueprint to guide PSAPs in upgrading their infrastructure — covering hardware, software, and operational procedures — for the deployment of NG eCall. The blueprint will ensure seamless cross-border interoperability, communication flow and data integration with traffic management centres and third-party service providers.
The project brings together the expertise and experience of 41 partners from across Europe. The diverse range of professionals involved will ensure the development of a comprehensive implementation plan for NGeCall towards improving road safety in the European Union – and beyond.
Our role
As a key partner in X_HeERO, EENA will provide its expertise to:
- Analyse the current situation in Member States for a clearer overview of eCall deployment and operations and provide upgrade recommendations.
- Support the adoption of relevant standards in the implementation of the NGeCall architecture.
- Offer technical guidance, coordinate the formulation of implementation guidelines, and ensure interoperability with other services to facilitate the deployment process.
X_HeERO aims to ensure participating PSAPs are fully and timely prepared for NG eCall, in line with EU regulations. The upgrade will lead to faster emergency responses, improved road safety, and enhanced cross-border cooperation across Europe.
