Exacerbated by climate change, natural and man-made disasters are becoming more frequent and extreme, endangering the safety of EU citizens. Under these circumstances, the EU space assets have the potential to enhance the operations of civil protection authorities.

The objective of the EU-funded project SUNSHINE is to promote the use of the EU space services, such as the Galileo Emergency Warning Satellite Service (EWSS) and the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS), by EU civil protection authorities.

The project’s comprehensive capacity building porgramme will include trainings, demonstrations and simulation exercises, enhancing the understanding, access and operational uptake of the space assets across EU Member States. The in-depth training will facilitate the application of the EU space assets in public warning, disaster management, and other crucial activities.

SUNSHINE aims to contribute to Europe’s resilience and preparedness to crisis situations, encouraging a mindset in national civil protection entities for better integration of EU space services.

The project started in January 2025 and will last for 2 years.
