How can I use 112 if I’m deaf or hard of hearing? This is a frequently asked question.
Equal access to 112 has been a requirement for Member States for many years (Art. 26.4 of the 2009 Universal Service Directive, or USD), but official data published shows that this is not always the case.
From now on, Italy improves accessibility to 112 with the implementation of 112 Sordi – a new free public service designed to improve support for deaf people.
The system guarantees to be intuitive, without the need for intermediaries and is expected to reduce response times.
Both the registration and the service are completely free of charge. The system has been tested by the ENS with the help of 21 deaf people from all over Italy.
This implementation was possible due to collaboration between the Ministry of the Interior and the ENS – in agreement with the Ministry of Economic Development and the technical and operational support of the Piedmont Region.
