Telenor, a major telecommunications provider in Norway, recently experienced an outage that disrupted emergency calls to the police’s 112 number for three hours.
This incident also affected customers of other mobile providers like Telia and Ice. As a result, Norway’s National Communications Authority (Nkom) will now supervise Telenor, focusing on whether Telenor meets the required security standards in their mobile networks.
This event is part of a broader pattern, with similar outages occurring globally among significant telecom companies, leading to regulatory scrutiny. For example, BT was fined in the UK for mishandling an emergency call outage in 2023, and in Australia, Telstra faced issues with its Triple Zero emergency service. In response to these incidents, authorities increasingly enforce stricter regulations to ensure better communication and preparedness during outages.
