Each year on 11 February, Europe is proud to come together to celebrate European 112 Day. Established in 2009, and dedicated to raising awareness of the European emergency number 112, it is a day to recognise the work of all those who contribute to the European emergency services chain.
Member States all over Europe organise communication activities and other events to promote the European Emergency number 112 to their citizens and help spread the message of 112.
For EENA members, 112 Day also coincides with the release of two resources supporting improvement and benchmarking in emergency communications.

The Fire and Rescue Service of the Czech Republic is preparing a series of educational events for this year’s European 112 Day, during which temporary operations centers will be set up in some shopping centers and public places. Here, in cooperation with the Police of the Czech Republic, the public will be able to try out the work of operators and communication in an emergency. These activities will be accompanied by a digital campaign on social networks and websites, including knowledge competitions with prizes on the theme of 112, thematic video spots, invitations to accompanying events, and overall promotion of European 112 Day, so that the campaign reaches the widest possible audience throughout the country. At the same time, professional articles using current operational data will be published to illustrate the workload and effectiveness of the 112 line.
In Finland, the Emergency Response Agency is planning the following actions:
112 Finland has expanded the activities around the 112 Day and emergency number week. During the emergency number week, the 112 theme can be highlighted by organising a theme day in a community, hosting a public event together with other stakeholders, or sharing 112-related information on social media. Materials to support this can be found on the agency’s webpage.
This year, 112 Finland has created specific 112 instructions and a campaign on social media to reach young men. According to research and observations by authorities, young men face, on average, more challenges in acting appropriately in emergency situations than other population groups. A young person may not want to intervene or may lack the confidence to act, even if they are the first one on the scene. At the same time, their trust in authorities may be lower than in other groups, which can increase uncertainty about how to respond in an emergency.
Reaching and engaging young men is important, as many situations that lead to emergencies occur in everyday environments where young people spend their time – in schools, during leisure activities, and within peer groups. In these moments, the most important thing is to do something – not to remain a bystander.
112 Finland has contacted various organisations that work with this target group (e.g. schools, youth centers, helplines etc.) and has distributed the instructions and the material with their help. Extensive media cooperation has also been carried out.
As part of the campaign, anyone can organise a public event. Events have been listed on the 112 Finland website.

There are also thematic competitions conducted for children, educational lectures at schools and presentations of statistics data – all related to the matter. Every year the 112 Day is the subject in all kinds of media, so it’s great opportunity to raise awareness for the significance of thee number and chance to educate public about its appropriate usage. Interviews conducted with operators, during PSAPs’ opened days, familiarize people with the job characteristics. Its became also the annual tradition that the Minister of the Interior and Administration honors the PSAPs’ most committed and devoted employees with awards and inscripted plaques. This year central celebration will be held in Kraków.

February 11 marks 112 Day, dedicated this year to the 14th anniversary of the Public Safety Command Center “112.” To mark the occasion, a jubilee information and communication campaign is planned, aiming to highlight the mission of “112,” the daily dedication of its employees, and the vital role the service plays in ensuring public safety.
As part of the anniversary events, the Director of 112, Giorgi Arsoshvili, will be featured in a morning television program. In addition, a special feature story will be prepared in advance and broadcast across various television news and other programs, ensuring broad media coverage of the campaign.
The campaign will also be actively implemented on social media platforms. Special emphasis will be placed on storytelling-format videos, in which 112 operators will briefly speak about their work, their emotions, and the high level of responsibility that accompanies their daily duties.
An important component of the anniversary celebration will be the award ceremony for the Best Employees of 2025. Employees recognized in various categories will be presented with certificates of appreciation and symbolic gifts.
This year, Portugal is giving particular prominence to the European 112 Day through digital channels and a range of in-person initiatives aimed at raising awareness of good practices and familiarising the public with emergency response institutions, as well as through the public recognition of citizens who have collaborated with 112 in an exemplary manner.
In Lisbon, a joint event will be held for hundreds of children, involving the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), the Public Security Police (PSP), Civil Protection Services and local Fire Brigades.
In Coimbra, we will fulfil the dream of a child with special needs to be part of INEM for a day, with a visit to the Dispatch Center (CODU) and to an emergency ambulance.
Through the media, we will promote the example of a nine-year-old child who, acting alone, called and collaborated exemplary with 112 to ensure effective assistance to their mother.
