Spain’s civil protection authority has announced the activation of an alert system that will notify the public via SMS and an accompanying audio alarm of major disasters and imminent or ongoing emergencies throughout the territory even if the handset is silent.
In a statement, the authority said the system has been developed in response to the requirements of the European Code of Electronic Communications, which states that all EU member states must have a system of this nature.
